Communication media ; about presence and read message signals ; anxieties and toxicity Show more
There is something that's becoming more and more present in communication media these years, is the presence and "read" marker
"<name> is connected", "<name> has read the message" etc
I feel it does way worse than good
At least to me.
I really don't react well to these signals, at all
I become anxious and it's hard to control.
It's better for me when it's asynchronous, like email or mastodon for example
What I mean is that: you send a message, and then the person responds when they can or like, and the app/service don't tell you every time they pop up in front of their screen
It's an information I *don't* need to have nor I want to because it makes me really anxious.
The *read* marker is a bit the same, why telling you when the person has read your message ? The only thing that you can get from that is knowing that someone has read your message but cannot or don't want to respond right away
It only amplifies toxic behaviours.
Let people take their time and respond to what they want when they want and can !
(hopefully as I try to centralize my means of communication in my project, I don't convey those signals so they don't bother me anymore)
